Bounty Master Carbon Poker’s Skill Ranking System

One of CarbonPoker’s many current events include the Bounty Grand Master Promotion. Carbon has implemented the Elo system, named after the Hungarian/American physicist, Arpad Elo, the system’s creator, who originally developed the ranking for Chess. However, the Elo Rating System was so popular, it was adopted by many other sports and games to track the skill level of players. Now it is being used by Carbon to rank poker players, giving high-ranking Carbon players certain bragging rights.

Your Elo rank will depend on a number of factors including, mainly, your wins and losses and the ranking of your opponent. You will earn a smaller rank increase by beating an opponent with a comparable ranking, but if you play against a lower-ranking opponent, and he beats you, your rank will be decreased substantially (your defeater’s will go up substantially). So, strategy wise, you’ll want to play against those players with rankings close to your own, to play it safe. But, who said poker was about playing it safe? If you play someone with a larger rank than you, who is willing to play a low ranker, your rank can go up significantly with a win. If you are the player with the lower rank, and you win, the rise will be in your favor. The score is about quality of play, not quantity (eliminations and tournament placement).

The only surefire way to keep your rank up is to steadily increase your ranking without dropping any significant amount at once. This actually makes playing poker even more fun than it already is (I swear). It makes it interesting on a whole new level. Unlike a leaderboard, where you can only get farther and farther down the list, as the big-winner high-rollers trample up the ladder, the Elo system lets you knock the big winners down as you climb.

All CarbonPoker Bounty tournaments and Sit & Go’s are eligible. When you register for your first Bounty tournament, your ranking will be automatically set at 1500. This score will increase and decrease accordingly as you play. The good thing is that every player’s score is re-set every month, so if you bomb your score, you can start over again on the 21st of each month. Watch out, though, because if you go 3 days in a row without playing in a bounty tourney, your Elo will go down 15 points, and again 3 days later, and so on and so on.
